about

Welcome to the liner notes for my newest album: Decadetritus; a title which arose because I like the idea of detritus; especially because a number of these songs have existed as unrelated fragments on my iPod for the last couple of years. It also works because I recently finished the decade known as my 20’s, which left behind at least an albums worth of debris.

All the parts were played by me either in my 6’ tall basement studio or in my friend Joel’s lake house (see if you can tell which ones). Sometimes the songs happened very fast, and sometimes they took so goddamn long to finish that I wanted to just delete them (again, see if you can tell which ones). Bela Fleck says that most of us are just writing our quintessential song over and over again; and I certainly think that’s true for me. Having said that, there is little by way of a unifying thread for this album, other than that they come from a place of joy and exploration that I used to fear I would never be able to get back to again (as well as from a place of anger and confusion that I am never far away from).

I know 10 songs is a lot to take in, so just skip to the next song if you find yourself in the middle of something too folky, or rocky, or dancey… but be patient, there are lots of little surprises. I did my best to make these songs sound great through real speakers, but this is definitely a headphones-on, walking-in-the-evening, water-bottle-full-of-red-wine, kind of album.

For my fellow nerds out there, I recorded in Cubase 5 using Komplete 6 and Waves Diamond plug-ins to generate all of the non-acoustic sounds and used a Scarlett 18i6 for mics and MIDI.
